The 43 Squadron Legacy
Sadly, the formal announcement that the final Typhoon squadron to be formed will be No 2 Sqn has finally removed any immediate prospect of The Fighting Cocks being reformed. The transfer later this year of the Leuchars’ squadrons to Lossiemouth has now therefore prompted a review of the display options for the remaining 43 Sqn paintings at Leuchars to ensure that The Fighting Cocks and their distinguished heritage remain in the public eye. We are currently preparing recommendations for a number of suitable items to be withheld from storage together with locations for their display on loan that would ensure both secure custody and appropriate public access.
Future Reunions
Our survey at the end of last year confirmed that the majority of members who responded were in favour of continuing with our customary annual dinner. Our next reunion will take place this year on 17 May – full details can be found on the events page.
Centenary Events at Stirling
Plans are continuing to develop to mark the centenary of the squadron’s formation at Stirling in 1916. This will take place over the weekend of 21-22 May 2016 and will include a formal dinner in the castle. Approval has been given for the Squadron Standard to be laid-up in the Church of the Holy Rude as part of the centennial celebrations. At the same time, a memorial to 43 Squadron will be unveiled within the church in a concurrent service of dedication. A less formal memorial at Falleninch Farm will also be dedicated during the weekend of celebrations.
